A two-month-old infant is at a Hamilton hospital in critical condition with what police describe as "grave" injuries.
The Niagara Regional Police major crime unit is currently investigating the "suspicious circumstances" of the child's injuries.
"We are interviewing anyone who may have had contact with the child over the last several days, said Det. Sgt. Brett Flynn.
Family and Children's Services of Niagara informed police of the injured baby Wednesday after a family member of the little girl brought the infant to the Greater Niagara General Hospital that morning.
The child was assessed and immediately transferred to the McMaster Children's Hospital in Hamilton.
The girl remains in hospital in critical condition with a suspected brain injury.
Police confirm the child lives in the southend of Niagara Falls and detectives are speaking with family members as part of the investigation.
"In all cases in regards to infant injury we speak to all members of the family as procedure. Obviously, a child can't speak for themselves," said Const. Jacquie Forgeron.
Citing privacy issues, FACS would not comment on the family's involvement, if any, with the agency.
Ann Godfrey, director of development and public relations at FACS, said it is normal practice for the hospitals, the police and FACS to co-operate on an investigation concerning any suspected or actual injury to a child, particularly those of a serious or suspicious nature.
